~On May 25th, our sweet friend Denise Montgomery suffered a stroke while working at their family camp in Kenora, Ontario, Canada. She was rushed by ambulance to the hospital. This was only the beginning of a long and scary journey.
~While doing scans for the stroke, a large mass was discovered in her uterus. She was told that there was a great possibility that it was cancerous and that surgery was needed immediately. Denise was medi-flighted to Duluth, Minnesota.
~The doctors in Duluth did many tests to try and discover the cause of the stroke. They were very hesitant to do surgery without knowing the cause. During this time she was in the intensive care unit. Her three children were able to fly into Minnesota to be with her and it was a very difficult time of many tests, scans and uncertainty.
~Her doctors in Duluth were unable to find the cause of the stroke and were also unable to verify whether the mass was cancerous or not so Denise was once again transferred. She was taken by ambulance to a hospital just outside of Minneapolis. This hospital had an oncology unit and the Obgyn/surgeon specialized in cases like Denise's.
~After many more tests, Denise was finally cleared for surgery on Thursday, June the 3rd. The morning of the surgery the specialists finally discovered the cause of her stroke; Denise carried one gene for a hereditary blood coagulation disorder. On it's own it most likely wouldn't have caused any problems, but combined with everything else it triggered the stroke. Finding the cause was a relief for the doctors. It made it more likely that the mass was non-cancerous and also allowed them to control Denise's future stroke risk.
~The surgery was long and difficult but Denise came through wonderfully. She truly believes that it was because of the many, many people holding her up in prayer. And the greatest blessing came when the doctors were able to confirm that mass was non-cancerous!
~After a little over two weeks, Denise was finally released from the hospital. She has been given a prescription for a blood thinner to help control the clotting disorder. She and her husband Randy will be making the trip back to Kenora, Canada where she will spend the rest of the summer recovering. Her surgery was a major one and will require many months of recovery. She is already doing very well on the stroke side and continues to improve every day.
~We, her friends, have started this page as a way to show our love and support for Denise and her husband Randy. Denise is known by so many for her sweet, thoughtful ways. Even throughout her whole ordeal she could only think of others. As you can only imagine, the medical bills from this are staggering. By helping to relieve some of their burden we will be showing our love for our dear, sweet friend.
Thank you!
